Modern Love Xlvii: We Saw The Swallows Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDDCEFFEGHHG

We saw the swallows gathering in the skyA
And in the osier isle we heard them noiseB
We had not to look back on summer joysB
Or forward to a summer of bright dyeA
But in the largeness of the evening earthC
Our spirits grew as we went side by sideD
The hour became her husband and my brideD
Love that had robbed us so thus blessed our dearthC
The pilgrims of the year waxed very loudE
In multitudinous chatterings as the floodF
Full brown came from the West and like pale bloodF
Expanded to the upper crimson cloudE
Love that had robbed us of immortal thingsG
This little moment mercifully gaveH
Where I have seen across the twilight waveH
The swan sail with her young beneath her wingsG
