Modern Love Ix: He Felt The Wild Beast Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDEDFGGFHIIH

He felt the wild beast in him betweenwhilesA
So masterfully rude that he would grieveB
To see the helpless delicate thing receiveB
His guardianship through certain dark defilesA
Had he not teeth to rend and hunger tooC
But still he spared her Once 'Have you no fear 'D
He said 'twas dusk she in his grasp none nearE
She laughed 'No surely am I not with you 'D
And uttering that soft starry 'you ' she leanedF
Her gentle body near him looking upG
And from her eyes as from a poison cupG
He drank until the flittering eyelids screenedF
Devilish malignant witch and oh young beamH
Of heaven's circle glory Here thy shapeI
To squeeze like an intoxicating grapeI
I might and yet thou goest safe supremeH
