What splendour of imperial station manA
The Tree of Life may reach when rooted fastB
His branching stem points way to upper airC
And skyward still aspires we see in himD
Who sang for us the Archangelical hostE
Made Morning by old Darkness urged to the abyssF
A voice that down three centuries onward rollsG
Onward will roll while lives our English tongueH
In the devout of music unsurpassedB
Since Piety won Heaven's ear on Israel's harpI
-
The face of Earth the soul of Earth her charmJ
Her dread austerity the quavering fateK
Of mortals with blind hope by passion swayedL
His mind embraced the while on trodden soilM
Defender of the Commonwealth he joinedN
Our temporal fray whereof is vital fruitO
And choosing armoury of the Scholar stoodP
Beside his peers to raise the voice for FreedomQ
Nor has fair Liberty a champion armedR
To meet on heights or plains the SophisterC
Throughout the ages equal to this manA
Whose spirit breathed high Heaven and drew thenceS
The ethereal sword to smiteR
-
Were England sunkT
Beneath the shifting tides her heart her brainU
The smile she wears the faith she holds her bestR
Would live full toned in the grand deliveryC
Of his cathedral speech an utteranceV
Almost divine and such as HellespontR
Crashing its breakers under Ida's frownW
Inspired yet worthier he whose instrumentR
Was by comparison the coarse reed pipeX
Whereof have come the marvellous harmoniesY
Which with his lofty theme of infinite rangeZ
Abash entrance exaltR
-
We need him nowA2
This latest Age in repetition criesB2
For Belial the adroit is in our midstR
Mammon more swoln to squeeze the slavish sweatR
From hopeless toil and overshadowinglyM
Aggrandized monstrous in his grinning maskC2
Of hypocritical Peace inveterate MolochD2
Remains the great exampleM
-
Homage to himD
His debtor band innumerable as wavesE2
Running all golden from an eastern sunF2
Joyfully render in deep reverenceV
Subscribe and as they speak their Milton's nameG2
Rays of his glory on their foreheads bearC
