IA
-
The day that is the night of daysB
With cannon fire for sun ablazeB
We spy from any billow's liftC
And England still this tidal driftC
Would she to sainted forethought vowD
A space before the thunders floodE
That martyr of its hour might nowD
Spare her the tears of bloodE
-
IIA
-
Asleep upon her ancient deedsF
She hugs the vision plethora breedsF
And counts her manifold increaseG
Of treasure in the fruits of peaceG
What curse on earth's improvidentE
When the dread trumpet shatters restE
Is wreaked she knows yet smiles contentE
As cradle rocked from breastE
-
IIIA
-
She impious to the Lord of HostsH
The valour of her offspring boastsH
Mindless that now on land and mainI
His heeded prayer is active brainI
No more great heart may guard the homeJ
Save eyed and armed and skilled to cleaveK
Yon swallower wave with shroud of foamJ
We see not distant heaveK
-
IVK
-
They stand to be her sacrificeL
The sons this mother flings like diceL
To face the odds and brave the FatesM
As in those days of starry datesM
When cannon cannon's counterblastE
Awakened muzzle muzzle bowledE
And high in swathe of smoke the mastE
Its fighting rag outrolledE
