Chillanwallah ChillanwallahA
Where our brothers fought and bledB
O thy name is natural musicC
And a dirge above the deadB
Though we have not been defeatedD
Though we can't be overcomeE
Still whene'er thou art repeatedF
I would fain that grief were dumbE
-
Chillianwallah ChillianwallahA
'Tis a name so sad and strangeG
Like a breeze through midnight harpstringsH
Ringing many a mournful changeG
But the wildness and the sorrowI
Have a meaning of their ownJ
Oh whereof no glad to morrowI
Can relieve the dismal toneJ
-
Chillianwallah ChillianwallahA
'Tis a village dark and lowA
By the bloody Jhelum riverK
Bridged by the foreboding foeA
And across the wintry waterK
He is ready to retreatL
When the carnage and the slaughterK
Shall have paid for his defeatL
-
Chillianwallah ChillianwallahA
'Tis a wild and dreary plainM
Strewn with plots of thickest jungleA
Matted with the gory stainM
There the murder mouthed artilleryN
In the deadly ambuscadeL
Wrought the thunder of its treacheryN
On the skeleton brigadeL
-
Chillianwallah ChillianwallahA
When the night set in with rainM
Came the savage plundering devilsH
To their work among the slainM
And the wounded and the dyingO
In cold blood did share the doomP
Of their comrades round them lyingO
Stiff in the dead skyless gloomP
-
Chillianwallah ChillianwallahA
Thou wilt be a doleful chordL
And a mystic note of mourningO
That will need no chiming wordL
And that heart will leap with anguishQ
Who may understand thee bestL
But the hopes of all will languishQ
Till thy memory is at restL
