Translations. - Lyrisches Intermezzo. Xxxviii. (from Heine.) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFG FHFH IJKJ DLMN MOPQ

The phantoms of times forgottenA
Arise from out their graveB
And show me how once in thy presenceC
I lived the life it gaveB
-
In the day I wandered dreamingD
Through the streets with unsteady footE
The people looked at me in wonderF
I was so mournful and muteG
-
At night then it was betterF
For empty was the townH
I and my shadow togetherF
Walked speechless up and downH
-
My way with echoing footstepI
Over the bridge I tookJ
The moon broke out of the watersK
And gave me a meaning lookJ
-
I stopped before thy dwellingD
And gazed and gazed againL
Stood staring up at thy windowM
My heart was in such painN
-
I know that thou from thy windowM
Didst often look downward andO
Sawest me there in the moonlightP
A motionless pillar standQ
