Thy world is made to fit thine ownA
A nursery for thy children smallB
The playground footstool of thy throneA
Thy solemn school room Father of allB
When day is done in twilight's gloomC
We pass into thy presence roomC
-
Because from selfishness and wrathD
Our cold and hot extremes of illE
We grope and stagger on the pathD
Thou tell'st us from thy holy hillE
With icy storms and sunshine rudeF
That we are all unripe in goodG
-
Because of snaky things that creepH
Through our soul's sea dim undulantG
Thou fill'st the mystery of thy deepH
With faces heartless grim and gauntG
That we may know how ugly seemI
The things our spirit oceans teemI
-
Because of half way things that holdG
Good names and have a poisonous breathJ
Prudence that is but trust in goldG
And faith that is but fear of deathJ
Amongst thy flowers the lovely broodG
Thou sendest some that are not goodG
-
Thou stay'st thy hand from finishing thingsK
To make thy child love the completeG
Full many a flower comes up thy springsK
Unshamed in imperfection sweetG
That through good all and good in partG
Thy work be perfect in the heartG
-
Because in careless confidenceL
So oft we leave the narrow wayM
Its borders thorny hedges fenceN
Beyond them marshy deeps affrayO
But farther on the heavenly roadG
Lies through the gardens of our GodG
-
Because thy sheep so often willE
Forsake the meadow cool and dampP
To climb the stony grassless hillE
Or wallow in the slimy swampQ
Thy sicknesses where'er they roamR
Go after them to bring them homeR
-
One day all fear all uglinessS
All pain all discord dumb or loudG
All selfishness and all distressT
Will melt like low spread morning cloudG
And heart and brain be free from thrallB
Because thou God art all in allB
