Up cam the tide wi' a burst and a whushA
And back gaed the stanes wi' a whurrB
The king's son walkit i' the evenin hushA
To hear the sea murmur and murrB
-
Straucht ower the water slade frae the muneC
A glimmer o' cauld weet lichtD
Ane o' her horns rase the water abuneC
And lampit across the nichtD
-
Quhat's that and that far oot i' the grayB
The laich mune bobbin aforeB
It's the bonny sea maidens at their playB
Haud awa king's son frae the shoreB
-
Ae rock stude up like an auld aik rootD
The king's son he steppit ahin'C
The bonny sea maidens cam gambolin ootD
Kaimin their hair to the win'C
-
O merry their lauch whan they fan the warm san'C
For the lichtsome reel sae meetD
Ilk are flang her kaim frae her pearly ban'C
And tuik til her pearly feetD
-
But are wha's beauty was dream and spellE
Her kaim on the rock she cuistD
Her back was scarce turnt whan the munelicht shellE
Was lyin i' the prince's breistD
-
The cluds grew grim as he watched their gameF
Th' win' blew up an angry tuneC
Ane efter are tuik up her kaimF
And seaward gaed dancin doonC
-
But are wi' hair like the mune in a cludD
Was left by the rock her laneC
Wi' flittin ban's like a priest's she studeD
'Maist veiled in a rush o' rainC
-
She spied the prince she sank at his feetD
And lay like a wreath o' snawC
Meltin awa i' the win' and weetD
O' a wastin wastlin thawG
-
He liftit her trimlin wi' houp and dreidD
And hame wi' his prize he gaedD
And laid her doon like a witherin weedD
Saft on a gowden bedD
-
A' that nicht and a' day the neistD
She never liftit heidD
Quaiet lay the sea and quaiet lay her breistD
And quaiet lay the kirkyard deidD
-
But quhan at the gloamin a sea breeze keenC
Blew intil the glimsome roomH
Like twa settin stars she opened her eenC
And the sea flooer began to bloomH
-
And she saw the prince kneelin at her bedD
And afore the mune was newC
Careless and cauld she was wooed and wedD
But a winsome wife she grewC
-
And a' gaed weel till their bairn was bornC
And syne she cudna sleepI
She wud rise at midnicht and wan'er till mornC
Hark harkin the sough o' the deepI
-
Ae nicht whan the win' gaed ravin abootD
And the winnocks war speckled wi' faemH
Frae room to room she strayt in and ootD
And she spied her pearly kaimH
-
She twined up her hair wi' eager ban'sJ
And in wi' the rainbow kaimH
She's oot and she's aff ower the shinin san'sJ
And awa til her moanin hameH
-
The prince he startit whaur he layB
He waukit and was himlaneC
He soucht far intil the mornin grayB
But his bonny sea wife was ganeC
-
And ever and aye i' the mirk or the muneC
Whan the win' blew saft frae the seaJ
The sad shore up and the sad shore doonC
By the lanely rock paced heJ
-
But never again on the sands to playB
Cam the maids o' the merry cauld seaJ
He heard them lauch far oot i' the bayB
But hert alane gaed heJ
