Grant Lord her prayer and let her goA
She crieth after usB
Nay to the dogs ye cast it soA
Serve not a woman thusB
-
Their pride by condescension fedC
He shapes with teaching tongueD
It is not meet the children's breadC
To little dogs be flungD
-
The words for tender heart so soreE
His voice did seem to rueF
The gentle wrath his countenance woreE
With her had not to doF
-
He makes her share the hurt of goodG
Takes what she would have lentH
That those proud men their evil moodI
May see and so repentH
-
And that the hidden faith in herJ
May burst in soaring flameK
With childhood deeper holierJ
Is birthright not the sameK
-
Ill names of proud religion bornL
She'll wear the worst that comesM
Will clothe her patient in their scornL
To share the healing crumbsM
-
Truth Lord and yet the puppies smallN
Under the table eatO
The crumbs the little ones let fallN
That is not thought unmeetO
-
The prayer rebuff could not amateO
Was not like water spiltO
O woman but thy faith is greatO
Be it even as thou wiltO
-
Thrice happy she who yet will dareP
Who baffled prayeth stillQ
He if he may will grant her prayerP
In fulness of her willQ
