She knelt she bore a bold requestA
Though shy to speak it outB
Ambition even in mother's breastA
Before him stood in doubtB
-
What is it Grant thy promise nowC
My sons on thy right handD
And on thy left shall sit when thouC
Art king Lord in the landD
-
Ye know not what ye ask There layE
A baptism and a cupF
She understood not in the wayE
By which he must go upF
-
Her mother love would lift them highG
Above their fellow menH
Her woman pride would standing nighG
Share in their grandeur thenH
-
Would she have joyed o'er prosperous questA
Counted her prayer well heardI
Had they of three on Calvary's crestA
Hung dying first and thirdI
-
She knoweth neither way nor endJ
In dark despair full soonK
She will not mock the gracious friendJ
With prayer for any boonK
-
Higher than love could dream or dareL
To ask he them will setM
They shall his cup and baptism shareL
And share his kingdom yetM
-
They entering at his palace doorN
Will shun the lofty seatO
Will gird themselves and water pourN
And wash each other's feetO
-
Then down beside their lowly LordP
On the Father's throne shall sitQ
For them who godlike help affordP
God hath prepared itQ
