The Failing Track Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKLWhere went the feet that hitherto have come | A |
Here yawns no gulf to quench the flowing past | B |
With lengthening pauses broke the path grows dumb | A |
The grass floats in the gazer stands aghast | B |
- | |
Tremble not maiden though the footprints die | C |
By no air path ascend the lark's clear notes | D |
The mighty throated when he mounts the sky | C |
Over some lowly landmark sings and floats | D |
- | |
Be of good cheer Paths vanish from the wave | E |
There all the ships tear each its track of gray | F |
Undaunted they the wandering desert brave | E |
In each a magic finger points the way | F |
- | |
No finger finely touched no eye of lark | G |
Hast thou to guide thy steps where footprints fail | H |
Ah then 'twere well to turn before the dark | G |
Nor dream to find thy dreams in yonder vale | H |
- | |
The backward way one hour is plain to thee | I |
Hard hap were hers who saw no trace behind | J |
Back to confession at thy mother's knee | I |
Back to the question and the childlike mind | J |
- | |
Then start afresh but toward unending end | K |
The goal o'er which hangs thy own star all night | L |
So shalt thou need no footprints to befriend | K |
Child heart and shining star will guide thee right | L |
