The witch lady walked along the strandA
Heard a roaring of the seaB
On the edge of a pool saw a dead man's handA
Good thing for a witch ladyB
-
Lightly she stepped across the rocksC
Came where the dead man layD
Now pretty maid with your merry mocksC
Now I shall have my wayD
-
On a finger shone a sapphire blueE
In the heart of six rubies redF
Come back to me my promise trueE
Come back my ring she saidF
-
She took the dead hand in the liveG
And at the ring drew sheB
The dead hand closed its fingers fiveG
And it held the witch ladyB
-
She swore the storm was not her deedH
Dark spells she backward spokeI
If the dead man heard he took no heedH
But held like a cloven oakI
-
Deathly cold crept up the tideJ
Sure of her made no hasteK
Crept up to her knees crept up each sideJ
Crept up to her wicked waistK
-
Over the blue sea sailed the brideJ
In her love's own sailing shipL
And the witch she saw them across the tideJ
As it rose to her lying lipL
-
Oh the heart of the dead and the hand of the deadF
Are strong hasps they to holdM
Fled the true dove with the kite's new loveN
And left the false kite with the oldM
