Traveller what lies over the hillA
Traveller tell to meB
Tip toe high on the window sillA
Over I cannot seeB
-
My child a valley green lies thereC
Lovely with trees and shyD
And a tiny brook that says 'Take careC
Or I'll drown you by and by '-
-
And what comes next A little townE
And a towering hill againF
More hills and valleys up and downE
And a river now and thenF
-
And what comes next A lonely moorG
Without one beaten wayH
And slow clouds drifting dull beforeI
A wind that will not stayH
-
And then Dark rocks and yellow sandJ
Blue sea and a moaning tideK
And then More sea and then more landJ
With rivers deep and wideK
-
And then Oh rock and mountain and valeL
Ocean and shores and menF
Over and over a weary taleL
And round to your home againF
-
And is that all From day to dayH
Like one with a long chain boundM
Should I walk and walk and not get awayH
But go always round and roundM
-
No no I have not told you the bestN
I have not told you the endO
If you want to escape away in the westN
You will see a stair ascendO
-
Built of all colours of lovely stonesP
A stair up into the skyD
Where no one is weary and no one moansP
Or wishes to be laid byD
-
Is it far away I do not knowQ
You must fix your eyes thereonR
And travel travel through thunder and snowQ
Till the weary way is goneR
-
All day though you never see it shineS
You must travel nor turn asideK
All night you must keep as straight a lineS
Through moonbeams or darkness wideK
-
When I am older Nay not soQ
I have hardly opened my eyesT
He who to the old sunset would goQ
Starts best with the young sunriseT
-
Is the stair right up is it very steepU
Too steep for you to climbV
You must lie at the foot of the glorious heapU
And patient wait your timeV
-
How long Nay that I cannot tellW
In wind and rain and frostX
It may be so and it is wellW
That you should count the costY
-
Pilgrims from near and from distant landsZ
Will step on you lying thereC
But a wayfaring man with wounded handsZ
Will carry you up the stairC
