Shall The Dead Praise Thee? Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGFG HIHI HJHJ KLKL MNMNI cannot praise thee By his instrument | A |
The master sits and moves nor foot nor hand | B |
For see the organ pipes this that way bent | C |
Leaning o'erthrown like wheat stalks tempest fanned | B |
- | |
I well could praise thee for a flower a dove | D |
But not for life that is not life in me | E |
Not for a being that is less than love | D |
A barren shoal half lifted from a sea | E |
- | |
Unto a land where no wind bloweth ships | F |
Thy wind one day will blow me to my own | G |
Rather I'd kiss no more their loving lips | F |
Than carry them a heart so poor and prone | G |
- | |
I bless thee Father thou art what thou art | H |
That thou dost know thyself what thou dost know | I |
A perfect simple tender rhythmic heart | H |
Beating its blood to all in bounteous flow | I |
- | |
And I can bless thee too for every smart | H |
For every disappointment ache and fear | J |
For every hook thou fixest in my heart | H |
For every burning cord that draws me near | J |
- | |
But prayer these wake not song Thyself I crave | K |
Come thou or all thy gifts away I fling | L |
Thou silent I am but an empty grave | K |
Think to me Father and I am a king | L |
- | |
My organ pipes will then stand up awake | M |
Their life soar as from smouldering wood the blaze | N |
And swift contending harmonies shall shake | M |
Thy windows with a storm of jubilant praise | N |
