Little Elfie Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEE GHGH IJIJ KLKL MEME KNKN OPOP QQQQ RSRS

I have a puppet jointed childA
She's but three half years oldB
Through lawless hair her eyes gleam wildA
With looks both shy and boldB
-
Like little imps her tiny handsC
Dart out and push and takeD
Chide her a trembling thing she standsC
And like two leaves they shakeD
-
But to her mind a minute goneE
Is like a year agoF
And when you lift your eyes anonE
Anon you must say NoE
-
Sometimes though not oppressed with careG
She has her sleepless fitsH
Then blanket swathed in that round chairG
The elfish mortal sitsH
-
Where if by chance in mood more graveI
A hermit she appearsJ
Propped in the opening of his caveI
Mummied almost with yearsJ
-
Or like an idol set uprightK
With folded legs for stemL
Ready to hear prayers all the nightK
And never answer themL
-
But where's the idol hermit thrustM
Her knees like flail joints goE
Alternate kiss her mother mustM
Now that now this big toeE
-
I turn away from her and writeK
For minutes three or fourN
A tiny spectre tall and whiteK
She's standing by the doorN
-
Then something comes into my headO
That makes me stop and thinkP
She's on the table the quadrupedO
And dabbling in my inkP
-
O Elfie make no haste to loseQ
Thy ignorance of offenceQ
Thou hast the best gift I could chooseQ
A heavenly confidenceQ
-
'Tis time long white gowned Mrs HamR
To put you in the arkS
Sleep Elfie God infolded lambR
Sleep shining through the darkS
