Little Boy Blue lost his way in a woodA
Sing apples and cherries roses and honeyB
He said I would not go back if I couldA
It's all so jolly and funnyB
-
He sang This wood is all my ownC
Apples and cherries roses and honeyB
Here I will sit a king on my throneC
All so jolly and funnyB
-
A little snake crept out of a treeB
Apples and cherries roses and honeyB
Lie down at my feet little snake said heB
All so jolly and funnyB
-
A little bird sang in the tree overheadD
Apples and cherries roses and honeyB
Come and sing your song on my finger he saidD
All so jolly and funnyB
-
Up coiled the snake the bird came downE
And sang him the song of Birdie BrownE
-
But little Boy Blue found it tiresome to sitF
Though it was on a throne he would walk a bitF
-
He took up his horn and he blew a blastG
Snake you go first and birdie come lastG
-
Waves of green snake o'er the yellow leaves wentH
The snake led the way and he knew what he meantH
-
But by Boy Blue's head with flutter and dartI
Flew Birdie Brown her song in her heartI
-
Boy Blue came where apples grew fair and sweetJ
Tree drop me an apple down at my feetJ
-
He came where cherries hung plump and redD
Come to my mouth sweet kisses he saidD
-
And the boughs bow down and the apples they dappleK
The grass too many for him to grappleK
-
And the cheeriest cherries with never a missL
Fall to his mouth each a full grown kissL
-
He met a little brook singing a songM
Little brook he said you are going wrongM
-
You must follow me follow me follow I sayN
Do as I tell you and come this wayN
-
And the song singing sing songing forest brookO
Leapt from its bed and after him tookO
-
And the dead leaves rustled yellow and wanP
As over their beds the water ranQ
-
He called every bird that sat on a boughR
He called every creature with poop and prowR
-
I mean with two ends that is nose and tailK
With legs or without they followed full sailK
-
Squirrels that carried their tails like a sackS
Each his own on his little brown humpy backS
-
Snails that drew their own caravansT
Poking out their own eyes on the point of a lanceU
-
And houseless slugs white black and redD
Snails too lazy to build a shedD
-
And butterflies flutterbys weasels and larksV
And owls and shrew mice and harkydarksV
-
Cockchafers henchafers cockioli birdsV
Cockroaches henroaches cuckoos in herdsV
-
The dappled fawns fawning the fallow deer followingW
The swallows and flies flying and swallowingW
-
All went flitting and sailing and flowingW
After the merry boy running and blowingW
-
The spider forgot and followed him spinningW
And lost all his thread from end to beginningW
-
The gay wasp forgot his rings and his waistX
He never had made such undignified hasteX
-
The dragon flies melted to mist with their hurryingW
The mole forsook his harrowing and burrowingW
-
The bees went buzzing not busy but beesyV
And the midges in columns upright and easyV
-
But Little Boy Blue was not contentH
Calling for followers still as he wentH
-
Blowing his horn and beating his drumY
And crying aloud Come all of you comeY
-
He said to the shadows Come after meV
And the shadows began to flicker and fleeV
-
And away through the wood went flattering and flutteringW
Shaking and quivering quavering and mutteringW
-
He said to the wind Come follow come followK
With whistle and pipe with rustle and holloK
-
And the wind wound round at his desireZ
As if Boy had been the gold cock on the spireA2
-
And the cock itself flew down from the churchB2
And left the farmers all in the lurchB2
-
Everything everything all and sumY
They run and they fly they creep and they comeY
-
The very trees they tugged at their rootsV
Only their feet were too fast in their bootsV
-
After him leaning and straining and bendingW
As on through their boles the army kept wendingW
-
Till out of the wood Boy burst on a leaV
Shouting and calling Come after meV
-
And then they rose with a leafy hissV
And stood as if nothing had been amissV
-
Little Boy Blue sat down on a stoneC
And the creatures came round him every oneC2
-
He said to the clouds I want you thereD2
And down they sank through the thin blue airD2
-
He said to the sunset far in the westE2
Come here I want you 'tis my behestE2
-
And the sunset came and stood up on the woldF2
And burned and glowed in purple and goldF2
-
Then Little Boy Blue began to ponderZ
What's to be done with them all I wonderZ
-
He thought a while then he said quite lowK
What to do with you all I am sure I don't knowK
-
The clouds clodded down till dismal it grewG2
The snake sneaked close round Birdie Brown flewG2
-
The brook like a cobra rose on its tailK
And the wind sank down with a what will you wailK
-
And all the creatures sat and staredH2
The mole opened the eyes that he hadn't and glaredH2
-
And for rats and bats and the world and his wifeI2
Little Boy Blue was afraid of his lifeI2
-
Then Birdie Brown began to singW
And what he sang was the very thingW
-
Little Boy Blue you have brought us all hitherZ
Pray are we to sit and grow old togetherZ
-
Go away go away said Little Boy BlueG2
I'm sure I don't want you get away doG2
-
No no no no no yes and no noK
Sang Birdie Brown it mustn't be soK
-
If we've come for no good we can't go awayN
Give us reason for going or here we stayN
-
They covered the earth they darkened the airD2
They hovered they sat with a countless stareD2
-
If I do not give them something to doG2
They will stare me up said Little Boy BlueG2
-
Oh dear oh dear he began to cryJ2
They're an awful crew and I feel so shyJ2
-
All of a sudden he thought of a thingW
And up he stood and spoke like a kingW
-
You're the plague of my life have done with your botherZ
Off with you all take me back to my motherZ
-
The sunset went back to the gates of the westE2
Follow me sang Birdie I know the way bestE2
-
I am going the same way as fast as I canQ
Said the brook as it sank and turned and ranQ
-
To the wood fled the shadows like scared black ghostsV
If we stay we shall all be missed from our postsV
-
Said the wind with a voice that had changed its cheerK2
I was just going there when you brought me hereL2
-
That's where I live said the sack backed squirrelK
And he turned his sack with a swing and a swirlK
-
Said the gold weather cock I'm the churchwardenQ
Said the mole I live in the parson's gardenQ
-
Said they all If that's where you want us to steer forM2
What on earth or in air did you bring us here forM2
-
You are none the worse said Boy If you won'tN2
Do as I tell you why then don'tN2
-
I'll leave you behind and go home without youG2
And it's time I did I begin to doubt youG2
-
He jumped to his feet The snake rose on his tailK
And hissed three times a hiss full of baleK
-
And shot out his tongue at Boy Blue to scare himO2
And stared at him out of his courage to stare himO2
-
You ugly snake Little Boy Blue saidD
Get out of my way or I'll break your headD
-
The snake would not move but glared at him glumY
Boy Blue hit him hard with the stick of his drumY
-
The snake fell down as if he was deadD
Little Boy Blue set his foot on his headD
-
Hurrah cried the creatures hurray hurrahP2
Little Boy Blue your will is a lawK
-
And away they went marching before himO2
And marshalled him home with a high cockolorumO2
-
And Birdie Brown sang Twirrr twitter twirrr tweeN
In the rosiest rose bush a rare nestE2
Twirrr twitter twirrr twitter twirrr twitter twirrrrr tweeeeeN
In the fun he has found the earnestQ2
