First born of the creating VoiceA
Minister of God's Spirit who wast sentB
Waiting upon him first what time he wentB
Moving about mid the tumultuous noiseC
Of each unpiloted elementD
Upon the face of the void formless deepE
Thou who didst come unbodied and aloneF
Ere yet the sun was set his rule to keepE
Or ever the moon shoneF
Or e'er the wandering star flocks forth were drivenG
Thou garment of the Invisible whose skirtH
Sweeps glory giving over earth and heavenG
Thou comforter be with me as thou wertH
When first I longed for words to beI
A radiant garment for my thought like theeI
-
We lay us down in sorrowJ
Wrapt in the old mantle of our mother NightK
In vexing dreams we strive until the morrowJ
Grief lifts our eyelids up and Lo the lightK
The sunlight on the wall And visions riseL
Of shining leaves that make sweet melodiesM
Of wind borne waves with thee upon their crestsN
Of rippled sands on which thou rainest downO
Of quiet lakes that smooth for thee their breastsN
Of clouds that show thy glory as their ownF
O joy O joy the visions are gone byP
Light gladness motion are realityI
-
Thou art the god of earth The skylark springsQ
Far up to catch thy glory on his wingsQ
And thou dost bless him first that highest soarsR
The bee comes forth to see thee and the flowersS
Worship thee all day long and through the skiesL
Follow thy journey with their earnest eyesL
River of life thou pourest on the woodsT
And on thy waves float out the wakening budsU
The trees lean toward thee and in loving painV
Keep turning still to see thee yet againW
South sides of pines haunted all day by theeI
Bear violins that tremble humanlyI
And nothing in thine eyes is mean or lowJ
Where'er thou art on every sideX
All things are glorifiedX
And where thou canst not come there thou dost throwJ
Beautiful shadows made out of the darkY
That else were shapeless now it bears thy markY
-
And men have worshipped theeI
The Persian on his mountain topZ
Waits kneeling till thy sun go upA2
God like in his serenityI
All giving and none gifted he draws nearB2
And the wide earth waits till his face appearB2
Longs patient And the herald glory leapsC2
Along the ridges of the outlying cloudsD2
Climbing the heights of all their towering steepsD2
Sudden still multitudinous laughter crowdsD2
The universal face Lo silentlyI
Up cometh he the never closing eyeP
Symbol of Deity men could not beI
Farthest from truth when they were kneeling unto theeI
-
Thou plaything of the childE2
When from the water's surface thou dost springF2
Thyself upon his chamber ceiling flingF2
And there in mazy dance and motion wildE2
Disport thyself etherial undefiledE2
Capricious like the thinkings of the childE2
I am a child again to think of theeI
In thy consummate gleeI
How I would play with thee athirst to climbG2
On sloping ladders of thy moted beamsD2
When through the gray dust darting in long streamsD2
How marvel at the dusky glimmering redE2
With which my closed fingers thou hadst madeE2
Like rainy clouds that curtain the sun's bedE2
And how I loved thee always in the moonH2
But most about the harvest timeG2
When corn and moonlight made a mellow tuneH2
And thou wast grave and tender as a cooing doveI2
And then the stars that flashed cold deathless loveI2
And the ghost stars that shimmered in the tideE2
And more mysterious earthly starsD2
That shone from windows of the hill and glenW
Thee prisoned in with lattice barsD2
Mingling with household love and rest of weary menW
And still I am a child thank God to spyP
Thee starry stream from bit of broken glassD2
Upon the brown earth undescriedE2
Is a found thing to me a gladness highP
A spark that lights joy's altar fire withinJ2
A thought of hope to prophecy akinJ2
That from my spirit fruitless will not passD2
-
Thou art the joy of ageK2
Thy sun is dear when long the shadow fallsD2
Forth to its friendliness the old man crawlsD2
And like the bird hung out in his poor cageK2
To gather song from radiance in his chairL2
Sits by the door and sitteth thereL2
His soul within him like a child that liesD2
Half dreaming with half open eyesD2
At close of a long afternoon in summerM2
High ruins round him ancient ruins whereL2
The raven is almost the only comerM2
Half dreams half broods in wondermentE2
At thy celestial ascentE2
Through rifted loop to light upon the goldE2
That waves its bloom in some high airy rentE2
So dreams the old man's soul that is not oldE2
But sleepy mid the ruins that infoldE2
-
What soul like changes evanescent moodsD2
Upon the face of the still passive earthN2
Its hills and fields and woodsD2
Thou with thy seasons and thy hours art ever calling forthO2
Even like a lord of music bentE2
Over his instrumentE2
Giving to carol now to tempest birthN2
When clear as holiness the morning rayP2
Casts the rock's dewy darkness at its feetE2
Mottling with shadows all the mountain grayP2
When at the hour of sovereign noonH2
Infinite silent cataracts sheetE2
Shadowless through the air of thunder breeding JuneH2
When now a yellower glory slanting passesD2
'Twixt longer shadows o'er the meadow grassesD2
And now the moon lifts up her shining shieldE2
High on the peak of a cloud hill revealedE2
Now crescent low wandering sun dazed awayP2
Unconscious of her own star mingled rayP2
Her still face seeming more to think than seeI
Makes the pale world lie dreaming dreams of theeI
No mood eternal or ephemeralQ2
But wakes obedient at thy silent callR2
-
Of operative single powerM2
And simple unity the one emblemS2
Yet all the colours that our passionate eyes devourM2
In rainbow moonbow or in opal gemT2
Are the melodious descant of divided theeI
Lo thee in yellow sands Lo theeI
In the blue air and seaI
In the green corn with scarlet poppies litE2
Thy half souls parted patient thou dost sitE2
Lo thee in dying triumphs of the westE2
Lo thee in dew drop's tiny breastE2
Thee on the vast white cloud that floats awayP2
Bearing upon its skirt a brown moon rayP2
Gold regent thou dost spendthrift throwJ
Thy hoardless wealth of gleam and glowJ
The thousand hues and shades upon the flowersD2
Are all the pastime of thy leisure hoursD2
The jewelled ores in mines that hidden beI
Are dead till touched by theeI
-
EverywhereL2
Thou art lancing through the airL2
Every atom from anotherM2
Takes thee gives thee to his brotherM2
ContinuallyI
Thou art wetting the wet seaI
Bathing its sluggish woods belowJ
Making the salt flowers bud and blowJ
SilentlyI
Workest thou and ardentlyI
Waking from the night of noughtE2
Into being and to thoughtE2
-
InfluencesD2
Every beam of thine dispensesD2
Potent subtle reaching farU2
Shooting different from each starU2
Not an iron rod can lieP
In circle of thy beamy eyeP
But its look doth change it soJ
That it cannot choose but showJ
Thou the worker hast been thereL2
Yea sometimes on substance rareL2
Thou dost leave thy ghostly markY
Even in what men call the darkY
Ever doing ever showingF2
Thou dost set our hearts a glowingF2
Universal something sentE2
To shadow forth the ExcellentE2
-
When the firstborn affectionsD2
Those winged seekers of the world withinJ2
That search about in all directionsD2
Some bright thing for themselves to winJ2
Through pathless woods through home bred fogsD2
Through stony plains through treacherous bogsD2
Long long have followed faces fairL2
Fair soul less faces vanished into airL2
And darkness is around them and aboveI2
Desolate of aught to loveI2
And through the gloom on every sideE2
Strange dismal forms are dim descriedE2
And the air is as the breathV2
From the lips of void eyed DeathV2
And the knees are bowed in prayerL2
To the Stronger than despairL2
Then the ever lifted cryP
Give us light or we shall dieP
Cometh to the Father's earsD2
And he hearkens and he hearsD2
-
As some slow sun would glimmer forthO2
From sunless winter of the northO2
We hardly trusting hopeful eyesD2
Discern and doubt the opening skiesD2
From a misty gray that lies onW2
Our dim future's far horizonG
It grows a fresh aurora sentE2
Up the spirit's firmamentE2
Telling through the vapours dunG
Of the coming coming sunG
Tis Truth awaking in the soulX2
His Righteousness to make us wholeX2
And what shall we this Truth receivingF2
Though with but a faint believingF2
Call it but eternal LightE2
'Tis the morning 'twas the nightE2
-
All things most excellentE2
Are likened unto thee excellent thingF2
Yea he who from the Father forth was sentE2
Came like a lamp to bringF2
Across the winds and wastes of nightE2
The everlasting lightE2
Hail Word of God the telling of his thoughtE2
Hail Light of God the making visibleQ2
Hail far transcending glory broughtE2
In human form with man to dwellY2
Thy dazzling gone thy power not lessD2
To show irradiate and blessD2
The gathering of the primal rays divineZ2
Informing chaos to a pure sunshineZ2
-
Dull horrid pools no motion makingF2
No bubble on the surface breakingF2
The dead air lies without a soundE2
Heavy and moveless on the marshy groundE2
-
Rushing winds and snow like driftE2
Forceful formless fierce and swiftE2
Hair like vapours madly rivenG
Waters smitten into dustE2
Lightning through the turmoil drivenG
Aimless useless yet it mustE2
-
Gentle winds through forests callingF2
Bright birds through the thick leaves glancingF2
Solemn waves on sea shores fallingF2
White sails on blue waters dancingF2
Mountain streams glad music givingF2
Children in the clear pool lavingF2
Yellow corn and green grass wavingF2
Long haired bright eyed maidens livingF2
Light O radiant it is thouA3
Light we know our Father nowA3
-
Forming ever without formB3
Showing but thyself unseenC3
Pouring stillness on the stormB3
Breathing life where death had beenJ2
If thy light thou didst draw inJ2
Death and Chaos soon were outE2
Weltering o'er the slimy seaI
Riding on the whirlwind's routE2
In wild unmaking energyI
God be round us and withinJ2
Fighting darkness slaying sinJ2
-
Father of Lights high lost unspeakableQ2
On whom no changing shadow ever fellY2
Thy light we know not are content to seeI
Thee we know not and are content to beI
Nay nay until we know thee not content are weI
But when thy wisdom cannot be expressedE2
Shall we imagine darkness in thy breastE2
Our hearts awake and witness loud for theeI
The very shadows on our souls that lieP
Good witness to the light supernal bearL2
The something 'twixt us and the skyP
Could cast no shadow if light were not thereL2
If children tremble in the nightE2
It is because their God is lightE2
The shining of the common dayE2
Is mystery still howe'er it ebb and flowJ
Behind the seeing orb the secret liesD2
Thy living light's eternal playE2
Its motions whence or whither who shall knowJ
Behind the life itself its fountains riseD2
In thee the Light the darkness hath no placeD2
And we have seen thee in the Saviour's faceD2
-
Enlighten me O Light why art thou suchD3
Why art thou awful to our eyes and sweetE2
Cherished as love and slaying with a touchD3
Why in thee do the known and unknown meetE2
Why swift and tender strong and delicateE2
Simple as truth yet manifold in mightE2
Why does one love thee and another hateE2
Why cleave my words to the portals of my speechE3
When I a goodly matter would inditeE2
Why mounts my thought of thee beyond my reachE3
In vain to follow thee I thee beseechE3
For God is lightE2
