The fact which suggested this poemA
is related by Clarke in his TravelsB
-
-
I-
-
Blue sky above blue sea belowC
Far off the old Nile's mouthD
'Twas a blue world wherein did blowC
A soft wind from the southD
-
In great and solemn heaves the massE
Of pulsing ocean beatF
Unwrinkled as the sea of glassE
Beneath the holy feetF
-
With forward leaning of desireG
The ship sped calmly onH
A pilgrim strong that would not tireG
Or hasten to be goneI
-
II-
-
List on the wave what can they beJ
Those sounds that hither glideK
No lovers whisper tremulouslyJ
Under the ship's round sideK
-
No sail across the dark blue sphereL
Holds white obedient wayM
No far fled sharp winged boat is nearL
No following fish at playM
-
'Tis not the rippling of the waveN
Nor sighing of the cordsO
No winds or waters ever gaveN
A murmur so like wordsP
-
Nor wings of birds that northward strainQ
Nor talk of hidden crewR
The traveller questioned but in vainQ
He found no answer trueR
-
III-
-
A hundred level miles awayM
On Egypt's troubled shoreS
Two nations fought that sunny dayM
With bellowing cannons' roarS
-
The fluttering whisper low and nearL
Was that far battle's blareT
A lipping rippling motion hereU
The blasting thunder thereT
-
IVN
-
Can this dull sighing in my breastV
So faint and undefinedW
Be the worn edge of far unrestV
Borne on the spirit's windW
-
The uproar of high battle foughtX
Betwixt the bond and freeJ
The thunderous roll of armed thoughtX
Dwarfed to an ache in meJ
