Brother artist help me comeA
Artists are a maimed bandB
I have words but not a handB
Thou hast hands though thou art dumbA
-
Had I thine when words did failC
Vassal words their hasting chiefD
On the white awaiting leafD
Shapes of power should tell the taleC
-
Had I hers of music mightE
I would shake the air with stormF
Till the red clouds trailed enormF
Boreal dances through the nightE
-
Had I his whose foresight rareG
Piles the stones with lordliest artH
From the quarry of my heartH
Love should climb a heavenly stairG
-
Had I his whose wooing slowI
Wins the marble's hidden childJ
Out in passion undefiledJ
Stood my Psyche white as snowI
-
Maimed a little help I prayK
Words suffice not for my endJ
Let thy hand obey thy friendJ
Say for me what I would sayK
-
Draw me on an arid plainL
With hoar headed mountains nighM
Under a clear morning skyM
Telling of a night of rainL
-
Huge and half shaped like a blockN
Chosen for sarcophagusO
By a Pharaoh gloriousO
One rude solitary rockN
-
Cleave it down along the ridgeP
With a fissure yawning deepQ
To the heart of the hard heapQ
Like the rent of riving wedgeR
-
Through the cleft let hands appearS
Upward pointed with pressed palmsT
As if raised in silent psalmsU
For salvation come anearS
-
Turn thee now 'tis almost doneV
To the near horizon's vergeW
Make the smallest arc emergeW
Of the forehead of the sunV
-
One thing more I ask too muchX
From a brow which hope makes braveY
Sweep the shadow of the graveY
With a single golden touchX
-
Thanks dear painter that is allZ
If thy picture one day shouldJ
Need some words to make it goodJ
I am ready to thy callZ
