The monk was praying in his cellA
With bowed head praying soreB
He had been praying on his kneesC
For two long hours and moreB
-
As of themselves all suddenlyD
His eyelids opened wideE
Before him on the ground he sawF
A man's feet close besideE
-
And almost to the feet came downG
A garment wove throughoutH
Such garment he had never seenI
In countries round aboutH
-
His eyes he lifted tremblinglyD
Until a hand they spiedE
A chisel scar on it he sawF
And a deep torn scar besideE
-
His eyes they leaped up to the faceJ
His heart gave one wild boundK
Then stood as if its work were doneL
The Master he had foundK
-
With sudden clang the convent bellD
Told him the poor did waitM
His hand to give the daily breadN
Doled at the convent gateM
-
Then Love rose in him passionateO
And with Duty wrestled strongP
And the bell kept calling all the timeQ
With merciless iron tongueR
-
The Master stood and looked at himS
He rose up with a sighT
He will be gone when I come backU
I go to him by and byT
-
He chid his heart he fed the poorV
All at the convent gateM
Then with slow dragging feet went backU
To his cell so desolateO
-
His heart bereaved by duty doneL
He had sore need of prayerW
Oh sad he lifted the latch and loD
The Master standing thereW
-
He said My poor had not to standX
Wearily at thy gateM
For him who feeds the shepherd's sheepY
The shepherd will stand and waitM
-
Yet Lord for thou would'st have us judgeZ
And I will humbly dareW
If he had staid I do not thinkA2
Thou wouldst have left him thereW
-
Thy voice in far off time I hearB2
With sweet defending sayC2
The poor ye always have with youD2
Me ye have not alwayE2
-
Thou wouldst have said Go feed my poorV
The deed thou shalt not rueD2
Wherever ye do my father's willD
I always am with youD2
