A Meditation Of St. Eligius Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGFH IJHJ KLKL MNMN OPOP QRQR STSU

Queen Mary one day Jesus sentA
To fetch some water legends tellB
The little boy obedientC
Drew a full pitcher from the wellB
-
But as he raised it to his headD
The water lipping with the rimE
The handle broke and all was shedD
Upon the stones about the brimE
-
His cloak upon the ground he laidF
And in it gathered up the pool Proverbs xxxG
Obedient there the water staidF
And home he bore it plentifulH
-
Eligius said Tis fabled illI
The hands that all the world controlJ
Had here been room for miracleH
Had made his mother's pitcher wholeJ
-
Still some few drops for thirsty needK
A poor invention even when toldL
In love of thee the Truth indeedK
Like broken pitcher yet may holdL
-
Thy truth alas Lord once I spiltM
I thought to bear the pitcher highN
Upon the shining stones of guiltM
I slipped and there the potsherds lieN
-
Master I cried no man will drinkO
No human thirst will e'er be stilledP
Through me who sit upon the brinkO
My pitcher broke thy water spilledP
-
What will they do I waiting leftQ
They looked to me to bring thy lawR
The well is deep and sin bereftQ
I nothing have wherewith to drawR
-
But as I sat in evil plightS
With dry parched heart and sickened brainT
Uprose in me the water brightS
Thou gavest me thyself againU
