THE YEAR OF THE TROUBLE IN LANCASHIREA
-
The skies are pale the trees are stiffB
The earth is dull and oldC
The frost is glittering as ifB
The very sun were coldC
And hunger fell is joined with frostD
To make men thin and wanE
Come babe from heaven or we are lostD
Be born O child of manF
-
The children cry the women shakeG
The strong men stare aboutH
They sleep when they should be awakeG
They wake ere night is outH
For they have lost their heritageI
No sweat is on their browJ
Come babe and bring them work and wageK
Be born and save us nowJ
-
Across the sea beyond our sightL
Roars on the fierce debateM
The men go down in bloody fightL
The women weep and hateM
And in the right be which that mayN
Surely the strife is longO
Come son of man thy righteous wayN
And right will have no wrongO
-
Good men speak lies against thine ownP
Tongue quick and hearing slowQ
They will not let thee walk aloneP
And think to serve thee soQ
If they the children's freedom sawR
In thee the children's kingS
They would be still with holy aweT
Or only speak to singS
-
Some neither lie nor starve nor fightL
Nor yet the poor denyU
But in their hearts all is not rightL
They often sit and sighU
We need thee every day and hourV
In sunshine and in snowQ
Child king we pray with all our powerV
Be born and save us soQ
-
We are but men and women LordW
Thou art a gracious childX
O fill our hearts and heap our boardW
Pray thee the winter's wildX
The sky is sad the trees are bareY
Hunger and hate aboutH
Come child and ill deeds and ill fareY
Will soon be driven outH
