The skies are pale the trees are stiffA
The earth is dull and oldB
The frost is glittering as ifA
The very sun were coldB
And hunger fell is joined with frostC
To make men thin and wanD
Come babe from heaven or we are lostC
Be born O child of manE
-
The children cry the women shakeF
The strong men stare aboutG
They sleep when they should be awakeF
They wake ere night is outG
For they have lost their heritageH
No sweat is on their browI
Come babe and bring them work and wageJ
Be born and save us nowI
-
Across the sea beyond our sightK
Roars on the fierce debateL
The men go down in bloody fightK
The women weep and hateL
And in the right be which that mayM
Surely the strife is longN
Come son of man thy righteous wayM
And right will have no wrongN
-
Good men speak lies against thine ownO
Tongue quick and hearing slowP
They will not let thee walk aloneO
And think to serve thee soP
If they the children's freedom sawQ
In thee the children's kingR
They would be still with holy aweS
Or only speak to singR
-
Some neither lie nor starve nor fightK
Nor yet the poor denyT
But in their hearts all is not rightK
They often sit and sighT
We need thee every day and hourU
In sunshine and in snowP
Child king we pray with all our powerU
Be born and save us soP
-
We are but men and women LordV
Thou art a gracious childW
O fill our hearts and heap our boardV
Pray thee the winter's wildW
The sky is sad the trees are bareX
Hunger and hate aboutG
Come child and ill deeds and ill fareX
Will soon be driven outG
