Ah me in ages far awayA
The good the heavenly landB
Though unbeheld quite near them layA
And men could understandB
-
The dead yet find it who when hereC
Did love it more than thisD
They enter in are filled with cheerE
And pain expires in blissD
-
Oh fairly shines the blessed landB
Ah God I weep and prayA
The heart thou holdest in thy handB
Loves more this sunny dayA
-
I see the hundred thousand waitF
Around the radiant throneG
To me it is a dreary stateF
A crowd of beings loneG
-
I do not care for singing psalmsH
I tire of good men's talkI
To me there is no joy in palmsJ
Or white robed solemn walkI
-
I love to hear the wild winds meetK
The wild old winds at nightL
To watch the starlight throb and beatK
To wait the thunder lightL
-
I love all tales of valiant menM
Of women good and fairN
If I were rich and strong ah thenM
I would do something rareN
-
I see thy temple in the skiesO
On pillars strong and whiteL
I cannot love it though I riseO
And try with all my mightL
-
Sometimes a joy lays hold on meP
And I am speechless thenM
Almost a martyr I could beP
And join the holy menM
-
But soon my heart is like a clodL
My spirit wrapt in doubtL
A pillar in the house of GodL
And never more go outL
-
No more the sunny breezy mornQ
No more the speechless moonR
No more the ancient hills forlornQ
A vision and a boonR
-
Ah God my love will never burnS
Nor shall I taste thy joyT
And Jesus' face is calm and sternS
I am a hapless boyT
