Few years have pass'd since thou and IA
Were firmest friends at least in nameB
And Childhood's gay sincerityC
Preserved our feelings long the sameB
-
But now like me too well thou know'stD
What trifles oft the heart recallE
And those who once have loved the mostF
Too soon forget they lov'd at allE
-
And such the change the heart displaysG
So frail is early friendship's reignH
A month's brief lapse perhaps a day'sG
Will view thy mind estrang'd againI
-
If so it never shall be mineJ
To mourn the loss of such a heartK
The fault was Nature's fault not thineJ
Which made thee fickle as thou artK
-
As rolls the Ocean's changing tideL
So human feelings ebb and flowM
And who would in a breast confideL
Where stormy passions ever glowM
-
It boots not that together bredN
Our childish days were days of joyO
My spring of life has quickly fledN
Thou too hast ceas'd to be a boyO
-
And when we bid adieu to youthP
Slaves to the specious World's controulM
We sigh a long farewell to truthP
That World corrupts the noblest soulM
-
Ah joyous season when the mindQ
Dares all things boldly but to lieM
When Thought ere spoke is unconfin'dQ
And sparkles in the placid eyeM
-
Not so in Man's maturer yearsR
When Man himself is but a toolM
When Interest sways our hopes and fearsR
And all must love and hate by ruleM
-
With fools in kindred vice the sameB
We learn at length our faults to blendS
And those and those alone may claimB
The prostituted name of friendS
-
Such is the common lot of manT
Can we then 'scape from folly freeC
Can we reverse the general planT
Nor be what all in turn must beC
-
No for myself so dark my fateU
Through every turn of life hath beenV
Man and the World so much I hateU
I care not when I quit the sceneW
-
But thou with spirit frail and lightX
Wilt shine awhile and pass awayY
As glow worms sparkle through the nightX
But dare not stand the test of dayY
-
Alas whenever Folly callsZ
Where parasites and princes meetD
For cherish'd first in royal hallsZ
The welcome vices kindly greetD
-
Ev'n now thou'rt nightly seen to addA2
One insect to the fluttering crowdB2
And still thy trifling heart is gladA2
To join the vain and court the proudB2
-
There dost thou glide from fair to fairC2
Still simpering on with eager hasteD2
As flies along the gay parterreC2
That taint the flowers they scarcely tasteD2
-
But say what nymph will prize the flameB
Which seems as marshy vapours moveE2
To flit along from dame to dameB
An ignis fatuus gleam of loveF2
-
What friend for thee howe'er inclin'dQ
Will deign to own a kindred careC2
Who will debase his manly mindQ
For friendship every fool may shareC2
-
In time forbear amidst the throngG2
No more so base a thing be seenW
No more so idly pass alongG2
Be something any thing but meanW
