Oh mihi pr teritos referat si Jupiter annosA
VIRGILB
-
Ye scenes of my childhood whose lov'd recollectionC
Embitters the present compar'd with the pastD
Where science first dawn'd on the powers of reflectionC
And friendships were form'd too romantic to lastD
-
Where fancy yet joys to retrace the resemblanceA
Of comrades in friendship and mischief alliedE
How welcome to me your ne'er fading remembranceA
Which rests in the bosom though hope is deny'dE
-
Again I revisit the hills where we sportedE
The streams where we swam and the fields where we foughtE
The school where loud warn'd by the bell we resortedE
To pore o'er the precepts by Pedagogues taughtE
-
Again I behold where for hours I have ponder'dE
As reclining at eve on yon tombstone I layF
Or round the steep brow of the churchyard I wander'dE
To catch the last gleam of the sun's setting rayF
-
I once more view the room with spectators surroundedE
Where as Zanga I trod on Alonzo o'erthrownC
While to swell my young pride such applauses resoundedE
I fancied that Mossop himself was outshoneC
-
Or as Lear I pour'd forth the deep imprecationC
By my daughters of kingdom and reason depriv'dE
Till fir'd by loud plaudits and self adulationC
I regarded myself as a Garrick reviv'dE
-
Ye dreams of my boyhood how much I regret youG
Unfaded your memory dwells in my breastE
Though sad and deserted I ne'er can forget youG
Your pleasures may still be in fancy possestE
-
To Ida full oft may remembrance restore meH
While Fate shall the shades of the future unrollF
Since Darkness o'ershadows the prospect before meH
More dear is the beam of the past to my soulF
-
But if through the course of the years which await meH
Some new scene of pleasure should open to viewG
I will say while with rapture the thought shall elate meH
Oh such were the days which my infancy knewG
