Decalogue Of The Artist Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AB CD EF GH IJI KL MN OP QHHR JSAO

I You shall love beauty which is the shadow of GodA
over the UniverseB
-
II There is no godless art Although you love not theC
Creator you shall bear witness to Him creating His likenessD
-
III You shall create beauty not to excite the sensesE
but to give sustenance to the soulF
-
IV You shall never use beauty as a pretext for luxuryG
and vanity but as a spiritual devotionH
-
V You shall not seek beauty at carnival or fairI
or offer your work there for beauty is virginalJ
and is not to be found at carnival or fairI
-
VI Beauty shall rise from your heart in songK
and you shall be the first to be purifiedL
-
VII The beauty you create shall be knownM
as compassion and shall console the hearts of menN
-
VIII You shall bring forth your work as a motherO
brings forth her child out of the blood of your heartP
-
IX Beauty shall not be an opiate that puts youQ
to sleep but a strong wine that fires you to actionH
for if you fail to be a true man or a true womanH
you will fail to be an artistR
-
X Each act of creation shall leave you humbleJ
for it is never as great as your dream and alwaysS
inferior to that most marvelous dream of GodA
which is NatureO
