HE COMFORTS HIMSELF WITH THE HOPE THAT SHE HEARS HIMB
-
-
My thoughts in fair alliance and arrayC
Hold converse on the theme which most endearsD
Pity approaches and repents delayC
E'en now she speaks of us or hopes or fearsD
Since the last day the terrible hour when FateA
This present life of her fair being reftA
From heaven she sees and hears and feels our stateA
No other hope than this to me is leftA
O fairest miracle most fortunate mindA
O unexampled beauty stately rareE
Whence lent too late too soon alas rejoin'dA
Hers is the crown and palm of good deeds thereE
Who to the world so eminent and clearF
Made her great virtue and my passion hereG

My thoughts were wont with sentiment so sweetA
To meditate their object in my breastA
Perhaps her sympathies my wishes meetA
With gentlest pity seeing me distress'dA
Nor when removed to that her sacred restA
The present life changed for that blest retreatA
Vanish'd in air my former visions fleetA
My hopes my tears in vain to her address'dA
O lovely miracle O favour'd mindA
Beauty beyond example high and rareE
So soon return'd from us to whence it cameI
There the immortal wreaths her temples bindA
The sacred palm is hers on earth so fairE
Who shone by her own virtues and my flameI
