Ripensando a quel ch' oggi il ciel onoraA
-
HE WOULD DIE OF GRIEF WERE SHE NOT SOMETIMES TO CONSOLE HIM BY HER PRESENCEB
-
-
To that soft look which now adorns the skiesC
The graceful bending of the radiant headD
The face the sweet angelic accents fledD
That soothed me once but now awake my sighsC
Oh when to these imagination fliesC
I wonder that I am not long since deadD
'Tis she supports me for her heavenly treadD
Is round my couch when morning visions riseC
In every attitude how holy chasteE
How tenderly she seems to hear the taleF
Of my long woes and their relief to seekG
But when day breaks she then appears in hasteE
The well known heavenward path again to scaleF
With moisten'd eye and soft expressive cheekG

'Tis sweet though sad my trembling thoughts to raiseH
As memory dwells upon that form so dearA
And think that now e'en angels join to praiseH
The gentle virtues that adorn'd her hereA
That face that look in fancy to beholdI
To hear that voice that did with music vieJ
The bending head crown'd with its locks of goldI
All all that charm'd now but sad thoughts supplyJ
How had I lived her bitter loss to weepK
If that pure spirit pitying my woeL
Had not appear'd to bless my troubled sleepK
Ere memory broke upon the world belowL
What pure what gentle greetings then were mineM
In what attention wrapt she paused to hearA
My life's sad course of which she bade me speakG
But as the dawn from forth the East did shineM
Back to that heaven to which her way was clearA
She fled while falling tears bedew'd each cheekG
