L' ultimo lasso de' miei giorni allegriA
-
HE REVERTS TO THEIR LAST MEETINGB
-
-
The last alas of my bright days and gladC
Few have been mine in this brief life belowD
Had come I felt my heart as tepid snowD
Presage perchance of days both dark and sadC
As one in nerves and pulse and spirits badC
Who of some frequent fever waits the blowD
E'en so I felt for how could I foreknowD
Such near end of the half joys I have hadC
Her beauteous eyes in heaven now bright and bless'dE
With the pure light whence health and life descendsF
Wretched and beggar'd leaving me behindG
With chaste and soul lit beams our grief address'dE
Tarry ye here in peace beloved friendsF
Though here no more we yet shall there be join'dH

Ah me the last of all my happy daysI
Not many happy days my years can showD
Was come I felt my heart as turn'd to snowD
Presage perhaps that happiness decaysI
E'en as the man whose shivering frame betraysI
And fluttering pulse the ague's coming blowD
'Twas thus I felt but could I therefore knowD
How soon would end the bliss that never staysI
Those eyes that now in heaven's delicious lightJ
Drink in pure beams which life and glory rainD
Just as they left mine blinded sunk in nightJ
Seem'd thus to say sparkling unwonted brightJ
Awhile beloved friends in peace remainD
Oh we shall yet elsewhere exchange fond looks againD
