Nom d' atra e tempestosa onda marinaA
-
HE IS LED BY LOVE TO REASONB
-
-
No wearied mariner to port e'er fledC
From the dark billow when some tempest's nighD
As from tumultuous gloomy thoughts I flyD
Thoughts by the force of goading passion bredC
Nor wrathful glance of heaven so surely spedC
Destruction to man's sight as does that eyeD
Within whose bright black orb Love's DeityE
Sharpens each dart and tips with gold its headC
Enthroned in radiance there he sits not blindF
Quiver'd and naked or by shame just veil'dG
A live not fabled boy with changeful wingH
Thence unto me he lends instruction kindF
And arts of verse from meaner bards conceal'dI
Thus am I taught whate'er of love I write or singH

-
Ne'er from the black and tempest troubled brineK
The weary mariner fair haven soughtL
As shelter I from the dark restless thoughtL
Whereto hot wishes spur me and inclineK
Nor mortal vision ever light divineK
Dazzled as mine in their rare splendour caughtJ
Those matchless orbs with pride and passion fraughtL
Where Love aye haunts his darts to gild and fineK
Him blind no more but quiver'd there I viewM
Naked except so far as shame concealsN
A winged boy no fable quick and trueM
What few perceive he thence to me revealsN
So read I clearly in her eyes' dear lightO
Whate'er of love I speak whate'er I writeO
