Amor mi sprona in un tempo ed affrenaA
-
HE HEARS THE VOICE OF REASON BUT CANNOT OBEYB
-
-
Love in one instant spurs me and restrainsC
Assures and frightens freezes me and burnsD
Smiles now and scowls now summons me and spurnsD
In hope now holds me plunges now in painsC
Now high now low my weary heart he hurlsC
Until fond passion loses quite the pathE
And highest pleasure seems to stir but wrathE
My harass'd mind on such strange errors feedsC
A friendly thought there points the proper trackF
Not of such grief as from the full eye breaksC
To go where soon it hopes to be at easeC
But as if greater power thence turn'd it backF
Despite itself another way it takesC
And to its own slow death and mine agreesC
