Where wail the waters in their flawA
A spectre wanders to and froB
And evermore that ghostly shoreC
Bemoans the heir of YvytotD
-
Sometimes when like a fleecy pallE
The mists upon the waters fallF
Across the main float shadows twainG
That do not heed the spectre's callF
-
The king his son of YvytotD
Stood once and saw the waters goB
Boiling around with hissing soundD
The sullen phantom rocks belowB
-
And suddenly he saw a faceH
Lift from that black and seething placeH
Lift up and gaze in mute amazeI
And tenderly a little spaceH
-
A mighty cry of love made heJ
No answering word to him gave sheJ
But looked and then sunk back againK
Into the dark and depthless seaJ
-
And ever afterward that faceH
That he beheld such little spaceH
Like wraith would rise within his eyesL
And in his heart find biding placeH
-
So oft from castle hall he creptD
Where mid the rocks grim shadows sleptD
And where the mist reached down and kissedD
The waters as they wailed and weptD
-
The king it was of YvytotD
That vaunted many years agoB
There was no coast his valiant hostD
Had not subdued with spear and bowM
-
For once to him the sea king criedD
In safety all thy ships shall rideD
An thou but swear thy princely heirN
Shall take my daughter to his brideD
-
And lo these winds that rove the seaJ
Unto our pact shall witness beJ
And of the oath which binds us bothO
Shall be the judge 'twixt me and theeJ
-
Then swore the king of YvytotD
Unto the sea king years agoB
And with great cheer for many a yearP
His ships went harrying to and froB
-
Unto this mighty king his throneQ
Was born a prince and one aloneQ
Fairer than he in form and bleeB
And knightly grace was never knownQ
-
But once he saw a maiden faceH
Lift from a haunted ocean placeH
Lift up and gaze in mute amazeI
And tenderly a little spaceH
-
Wroth was the king of YvytotD
For that his son would never goB
Sailing the sea but liefer beJ
Where wailed the waters in their flowB
-
Where winds in clamorous anger sweptD
Where to and fro grim shadows creptD
And where the mist reached down and kissedD
The waters as they wailed and weptD
-
So sped the years till came a dayD
The haughty king was old and grayD
And in his hold were spoils untoldD
That he had wrenched from NorrowayR
-
Then once again the sea king criedD
Thy ships have harried far and wideD
My part is done now let thy sonS
Require my daughter to his brideD
-
Loud laughed the king of YvytotD
And by his soul he bade him noB
I heed no more what oath I sworeC
For I was mad to bargain soB
-
Then spake the sea king in his wrathT
Thy ships lie broken in my pathT
Go now and wring thy hands false kingU
Nor ship nor heir thy kingdom hathT
-
And thou shalt wander evermoreC
All up and down this ghostly shoreC
And call in vain upon the twainG
That keep what oath a dastard sworeC
-
The king his son of YvytotD
Stood even then where to and froB
The breakers swelled and there beheldD
A maiden face lift from belowB
-
Be thou or truth or dream he criedD
Or spirit of the restless tideD
It booteth not to me God wotD
But I would have thee to my brideD
-
Then spake the maiden Come with meJ
Unto a palace in the seaJ
For there my sire in kingly ireV
Requires thy king his oath of theeJ
-
Gayly he fared him down the sandsW
And took the maiden's outstretched handsW
And so went they upon their wayR
To do the sea king his commandsW
-
The winds went riding to and froB
And scourged the waves that crouched belowB
And bade them sing to a childless kingU
The bridal song of YvytotD
-
So fell the curse upon that shoreC
And hopeless wailing evermoreC
Was the righteous dole of the craven soulB
That heeded not what oath he sworeC
-
An hundred ships went down that dayD
All off the coast of NorrowayR
And the ruthless sea made mighty gleeJ
Over the spoil that drifting layD
-
The winds went calling far and wideD
To the dead that tossed in the mocking tideD
Come forth ye slaves from your fleeting gravesX
And drink a health to your prince his brideD
-
Where wail the waters in their flowB
A spectre wanders to and froB
But nevermore that ghostly shoreC
Shall claim the heir of YvytotD
-
Sometimes when like a fleecy pallB
The mists upon the waters fallB
Across the main flit shadows twainG
That do not heed the spectre's callB
