Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGHDD IJIJKK LMLMBB NONOJJCome dear old friend and with us twain | A |
To calm Digentian groves repair | B |
The turtle coos his sweet refrain | A |
And posies are a blooming there | B |
And there the romping Sabine girls | C |
Bind myrtle in their lustrous curls | C |
- | |
I know a certain ilex tree | D |
Whence leaps a fountain cool and clear | E |
Its voices summon you and me | D |
Come let us haste to share its cheer | E |
Methinks the rapturous song it sings | F |
Should woo our thoughts from mortal things | F |
- | |
But good old friend I charge thee well | G |
Watch thou my brother all the while | H |
Lest some fair Lydia cast her spell | G |
Round him unschooled in female guile | H |
Those damsels have no charms for me | D |
Guard thou that brother I'll guard thee | D |
- | |
And lo sweet friend behold this cup | I |
Round which the garlands intertwine | J |
With Massic it is foaming up | I |
And we would drink to thee and thine | J |
And of the draught thou shalt partake | K |
Who lov'st us for our father's sake | K |
- | |
Hark you from yonder Sabine farm | L |
Echo the songs of long ago | M |
With power to soothe and grace to charm | L |
What ills humanity may know | M |
With that sweet music in the air | B |
'T is Love and Summer everywhere | B |
- | |
So though no grief consumes our lot | N |
Since all our lives have been discreet | O |
Come in this consecrated spot | N |
Let's see if pagan cheer be sweet | O |
Now then the songs but first more wine | J |
The gods be with you friends of mine | J |
