To M.l. Gray, Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGHDD IJIJKK LMLMBB NONOJJ

Come dear old friend and with us twainA
To calm Digentian groves repairB
The turtle coos his sweet refrainA
And posies are a blooming thereB
And there the romping Sabine girlsC
Bind myrtle in their lustrous curlsC
-
I know a certain ilex treeD
Whence leaps a fountain cool and clearE
Its voices summon you and meD
Come let us haste to share its cheerE
Methinks the rapturous song it singsF
Should woo our thoughts from mortal thingsF
-
But good old friend I charge thee wellG
Watch thou my brother all the whileH
Lest some fair Lydia cast her spellG
Round him unschooled in female guileH
Those damsels have no charms for meD
Guard thou that brother I'll guard theeD
-
And lo sweet friend behold this cupI
Round which the garlands intertwineJ
With Massic it is foaming upI
And we would drink to thee and thineJ
And of the draught thou shalt partakeK
Who lov'st us for our father's sakeK
-
Hark you from yonder Sabine farmL
Echo the songs of long agoM
With power to soothe and grace to charmL
What ills humanity may knowM
With that sweet music in the airB
'T is Love and Summer everywhereB
-
So though no grief consumes our lotN
Since all our lives have been discreetO
Come in this consecrated spotN
Let's see if pagan cheer be sweetO
Now then the songs but first more wineJ
The gods be with you friends of mineJ
