To John J. Knickerbocker, Jr. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDE FBFBGHGH IJIJKJKJ GBGBGJGJ

Whereas good friend it doth appearA
You do possess the notionB
To his awhile away from hereC
To lands across the oceanB
Now by these presents we would showD
That wheresoever wend youE
And wheresoever gales may blowD
Our friendship shall attend youE
-
What though on Scotia's banks and braesF
You pluck the bonnie gowanB
Or chat of old Chicago daysF
O'er Berlin brew with CowenB
What though you stroll some boulevardG
In Paris c'est la belle villeH
Or make the round of Scotland YardG
With our lamented MelvilleH
-
Shall paltry leagues of foaming brineI
True heart from true hearts severJ
No in this draught of honest wineI
We pledge it comrade neverJ
Though mountain waves between us rollK
Come fortune or disasterJ
'Twill knit us closer soul to soulK
And bind our friendships fasterJ
-
So here's a bowl that shall be quaff'dG
To loyalty's devotionB
And here's to fortune that shall waftG
Your ship across the oceanB
And here's a smile for those who prateG
Of Davy Jones's lockerJ
And here's a pray'r in every fateG
God bless you KnickerbockerJ
