Deere Chryste let not the cheere of earthA
To fill our hearts with heedless mirthA
This holy Christmasse timeB
But give us of thy heavenly cheereC
That we may hold thy love most deereC
And know thy peace sublimeB
-
-
-
Full merry waxed King Pelles courtD
With Yuletide cheere and Yuletide sportD
And when the board was spreadE
Now wit ye well 'twas good to seeF
So fair and brave a companieG
With Pelles at the headE
-
'Come hence Elaine ' King Pelles criedH
'Come hence and sit ye by my sideH
For never yet I trowC
Have gentle virtues like to thineG
Been proved by sword nor pledged in wineG
Nor shall be nevermo '-
-
'Sweete sir my father ' quoth ElaineG
'Me it repents to give thee painG
Yet tarry I may notI
For I shall soond and I shall dieJ
If I behold this companieG
And see not LauncelotI
-
'My heart shall have no love but thisK
My lips shall know no other kissK
Save only father thineG
So graunt me leave to seek my bowerC
The lonely chamber in the toureC
Where sleeps his child and mine '-
-
Then frowned the King in sore despiteL
'A murrain seize that traitrous knightL
For that he lies ' he criedH
'A base unchristian paynim heF
Else by my beard he would not beF
A recreant to his brideH
-
'Oh I had liefer yield my lifeM
Than see thee the deserted wifeM
Of dastard LauncelotI
Yet an' thou hast no mind to stayN
Go with thy damosels awayN
Lo I'll detain ye not '-
-
Her damosels in goodly trainG
Back to her chamber led ElaineG
And when her eyes were castO
Upon her babe her tears did flowC
And she did wail and weep as thoughC
Her heart had like to brastO
-
The while she grieved the Yuletide sportO
Waxed lustier in King Pelles' courtO
And louder houre by houreC
The echoes of the rout were borneG
To where the lady all forlornG
Made moning in the toureC
-
'Swete Chryste ' she cried 'ne let me hearC
Their ribald sounds of Yuletide cheereC
That mock at mine and meF
Graunt that my sore affliction ceaseP
And give me of the heavenly peaceP
That comes with thoughts of thee '-
-
Lo as she spake a wondrous lightO
Made all that lonely chamber brightO
And o'er the infant's bedO
A spirit hand as samite pailQ
Held sodaine foorth the Holy GrailQ
Above the infant's headO
-
And from the sacred golden cupR
A subtle incense floated upR
And filled the conscious airC
Which when she breather the fair ElaineG
Forgot her grief forgot her painG
Forgot her sore despairC
-
And as the Grail's mysterious balmS
Wrought in her heart a wondrous calmS
Great mervail 'twas to seeF
The sleeping child stretch one hand upR
As if in dreams he held the cupR
Which none mought win but heF
-
Through all the night King Pelles' courtO
Made mighty cheer and goodly sportO
Nor never recked the joyT
That was vouchsafed that Christmass tideO
To Launcelot's deserted brideO
And to her sleeping boyT
-
Swete Chryste let not the cheere of earthA
To fill our hearts with heedless mirthA
This present Christmasse nightO
But send among us to and froC
Thy Holy Grail that men may knowC
The joy withe wisdom dightO
