Sometime there ben a lyttel boyA
That wolde not renne and playB
And helpless like that little tykeC
Ben allwais in the wayB
Goe make you merrie with the restD
His weary moder criedE
But with a frown he catcht her gownF
And hong untill her sideE

That boy did love his moder wellG
Which spake him faire I weenF
He loved to stand and hold her handH
And ken her with his eenF
His cosset bleated in the croftI
His toys unheeded layB
He wolde not goe but tarrying soeJ
Ben allwais in the wayB

Godde loveth children and doth girdK
His throne with soche as theseJ
And He doth smile in plaisaunce whileL
They cluster at His kneesJ
And sometime when He looked on earthM
And watched the bairns at playB
He kenned with joy a lyttel boyA
Ben allwais in the wayB

And then a moder felt her heartN
How that it ben to torneF
She kissed eche day till she ben grayB
The shoon he used to wornF
No bairn let hold untill her gownF
Nor played upon the flooreB
Godde's was the joy a lyttel boyA
Ben in the way no moreB
