The Lyric Muse Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDCEFGF AHIHIJCJC AEKGKLMLM ANFNFOPQP

I love the lyric museA
For when mankind ran wild in groovesB
Came holy Orpheus with his songsC
And turned men's hearts from bestial lovesD
From brutal force and savage wrongsC
Amphion too and on his lyreE
Made such sweet music all the dayF
That rocks instinct with warm desireG
Pursued him in his glorious wayF
-
I love the lyric museA
Hers was the wisdom that of yoreH
Taught man the rights of fellow manI
Taught him to worship God the moreH
And to revere love's holy banI
Hers was the hand that jotted downJ
The laws correcting divers wrongsC
And so came honor and renownJ
To bards and to their noble songsC
-
I love the lyric museA
Old Homer sung unto the lyreE
Tyrt us too in ancient daysK
Still warmed by their immortal fireG
How doth our patriot spirit blazeK
The oracle when questioned singsL
So our first steps in life are taughtM
In verse we soothe the pride of kingsL
In verse the drama has been wroughtM
-
I love the lyric museA
Be not ashamed O noble friendN
In honest gratitude to payF
Thy homage to the gods that sendN
This boon to charm all ill awayF
With solemn tenderness revereO
This voiceful glory as a shrineP
Wherein the quickened heart may hearQ
The counsels of a voice divineP
