Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCACC DEEEFFEGG GGAAHHGCC AAIIJJAEEThe gingham dog and the calico cat | A |
Side by side on the table sat | A |
'T was half past twelve and what do you think | B |
Nor one nor t' other had slept a wink | B |
The old Dutch clock and the Chinese plate | C |
Appeared to know as sure as fate | C |
There was going to be a terrible spat | A |
I wasn't there I simply state | C |
What was told to me by the Chinese plate | C |
- | |
The gingham dog went bow wow wow | D |
And the calico cat replied mee ow | E |
The air was littered an hour or so | E |
With bits of gingham and calico | E |
While the old Dutch clock in the chimney place | F |
Up with its hands before its face | F |
For it always dreaded a family row | E |
Now mind I'm only telling you | G |
What the old Dutch clock declares is true | G |
- | |
The Chinese plate looked very blue | G |
And wailed Oh dear what shall we do | G |
But the gingham dog and the calico cat | A |
Wallowed this way and tumbled that | A |
Employing every tooth and claw | H |
In the awfullest way you ever saw | H |
And oh how the gingham and calico flew | G |
Don't fancy I exaggerate | C |
I got my news from the Chinese plate | C |
- | |
Next morning where the two had sat | A |
They found no trace of dog or cat | A |
And some folks think unto this day | I |
That burglars stole that pair away | I |
But the truth about the cat and pup | J |
Is this they ate each other up | J |
Now what do you really think of that | A |
The old Dutch clock it told me so | E |
And that is how I came to know | E |
