Two dreams came down to earth one nightA
From the realm of mist and dewB
One was a dream of the old old daysC
And one was a dream of the newB
-
One was a dream of a shady laneD
That led to the pickerel pondE
Where the willows and rushes bowed themselvesF
To the brown old hills beyondE
-
And the people that peopled the old time dreamG
Were pleasant and fair to seeH
And the dreamer he walked with them againI
As often of old walked heH
-
Oh cool was the wind in the shady laneD
That tangled his curly hairJ
Oh sweet was the music the robins madeK
To the springtime everywhereJ
-
Was it the dew the dream had broughtL
From yonder midnight skiesM
Or was it tears from the dear dead yearsN
That lay in the dreamer's eyesM
-
The other dream ran fast and freeH
As the moon benignly shedO
Her golden grace on the smiling faceP
In the little trundle bedO
-
For 't was a dream of times to comeQ
Of the glorious noon of dayR
Of the summer that follows the careless springS
When the child is done with playR
-
And 't was a dream of the busy worldT
Where valorous deeds are doneU
Of battles fought in the cause of rightA
And of victories nobly wonU
-
It breathed no breath of the dear old homeV
And the quiet joys of youthW
It gave no glimpse of the good old friendsX
Or the old time faith and truthW
-
But 't was a dream of youthful hopesY
And fast and free it ranZ
And it told to a little sleeping childA2
Of a boy become a manZ
-
These were the dreams that came one nightA
To earth from yonder skyB2
These were the dreams two dreamers dreamedC2
My little boy and IB2
-
And in our hearts my boy and IB2
Were glad that it was soD2
He loved to dream of days to comeQ
And I of long agoD2
-
So from our dreams my boy and IB2
Unwillingly awokeE2
But neither of his precious dreamG
Unto the other spokeE2
-
Yet of the love we bore those dreamsF2
Gave each his tender signG2
For there was triumph in his eyesM
And there were tears in mineG2
