The Dead Babe Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCB DEFBGH AAIJJI KKLMML MMMNNM

Last night as my dear babe lay deadA
In agony I knelt and saidA
God what have I doneB
Or in what wise offended TheeC
That Thou should'st take away from meC
My little sonB
-
Upon the thousand useless livesD
Upon the guilt that vaunting thrivesE
Thy wrath were better spentF
Why should'st Thou take my little sonB
Why should'st Thou vent Thy wrath uponG
This innocentH
-
Last night as my dear babe lay deadA
Before mine eyes the vision spreadA
Of things that might have beenI
Licentious riot cruel strifeJ
Forgotten prayers a wasted lifeJ
Dark red with sinI
-
Then with sweet music in the airK
I saw another vision thereK
A Shepherd in whose keepL
A little lamb my little childM
Of worldly wisdom undefiledM
Lay fast asleepL
-
Last night as my dear babe lay deadM
In those two messages I readM
A wisdom manifestM
And though my arms be childless nowN
I am content to Him I bowN
Who knoweth bestM
