They told me once that Pan was deadA
And so in sooth I thought himB
For vainly where the streamlets ledA
Through flowery meads I sought himB
Nor in his dewy pasture bedA
Nor in the grove I caught himB
Tell me 'twas so my clamor ranC
Tell me oh where is PanC
-
But once as on my pipe I playedD
A requiem sad and tenderE
Lo thither came a shepherd maidD
Full comely she and slenderE
I were indeed a churlish bladeD
With wailings to offend 'erE
For surely wooing's sweeter thanC
A mourning over PanC
-
So presently whiles I did scanC
That shepherd maiden prettyF
And heard her accents I beganC
To pipe a cheerful dittyF
And so betimes forgot old PanC
Whose death had waked my pityF
So so did Love undo the manC
Who sought and pined for PanC
-
He was not dead I found him thereE
The Pan that I was afterE
Caught in that maiden's tangling hairE
Drunk with her song and laughterE
I doubt if there be otherwhereE
A merrier god or dafterE
Nay nor a mortal kindlier thanC
Is this same dear old PanC
-
Beside me as my pipe I playG
My shepherdess is lyingH
While here and there her lambkins strayG
As sunny hours go flyingH
They look like me those lambs they sayG
And that I'm not denyingH
And for that sturdy romping clanC
All glory be to PanC
-
Pan is not dead O sweetheart mineI
It is to hear his voicesJ
In every note and every lineI
Wherein the heart rejoicesJ
He liveth in that sacred shrineI
That Love's first holiest choice isJ
So pipe my pipe while still you canC
Sweet songs in praise of PanC
