Long Ago Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGDGD HIHIGDGD JGJGCDCDI once knew all the birds that came | A |
And nested in our orchard trees | B |
For every flower I had a name | A |
My friends were woodchucks toads and bees | B |
I knew where thrived in yonder glen | C |
What plants would soothe a stone bruised toe | D |
Oh I was very learned then | C |
But that was very long ago | D |
- | |
I knew the spot upon the hill | E |
Where checkerberries could be found | F |
I knew the rushes near the mill | E |
Where pickerel lay that weighed a pound | F |
I knew the wood the very tree | G |
Where lived the poaching saucy crow | D |
And all the woods and crows knew me | G |
But that was very long ago | D |
- | |
And pining for the joys of youth | H |
I tread the old familiar spot | I |
Only to learn this solemn truth | H |
I have forgotten am forgot | I |
Yet here's this youngster at my knee | G |
Knows all the things I used to know | D |
To think I once was wise as he | G |
But that was very long ago | D |
- | |
I know it's folly to complain | J |
Of whatsoe'er the Fates decree | G |
Yet were not wishes all in vain | J |
I tell you what my wish should be | G |
I'd wish to be a boy again | C |
Back with the friends I used to know | D |
For I was oh so happy then | C |
But that was very long ago | D |
