In The Firelight Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDDC BEEBFGGF HIIHCJJC| The fire upon the hearth is low | A |
| And there is stillness everywhere | B |
| While like winged spirits here and there | B |
| The firelight shadows fluttering go | A |
| And as the shadows round me creep | C |
| A childish treble breaks the gloom | D |
| And softly from a further room | D |
| Comes Now I lay me down to sleep | C |
| - | |
| And somehow with that little prayer | B |
| And that sweet treble in my ears | E |
| My thoughts go back to distant years | E |
| And linger with a loved one there | B |
| And as I hear my child's amen | F |
| My mother's faith comes back to me | G |
| Crouched at her side I seem to be | G |
| And Mother holds my hands again | F |
| - | |
| Oh for an hour in that dear place | H |
| Oh for the peace of that dear time | I |
| Oh for that childish trust sublime | I |
| Oh for a glimpse of Mother's face | H |
| Yet as the shadows round me creep | C |
| I do not seem to be alone | J |
| Sweet magic of that treble tone | J |
| And Now I lay me down to sleep | C |
