HORACE'S ODES III IA
-
-
I hate the common vulgar herdB
Away they scamper when I booh 'emC
But pretty girls and nice young menD
Observe a proper silence whenD
I chose to sing my lyrics to 'emC
-
The kings of earth whose fleeting pow'rE
Excites our homage and our wonderF
Are precious small beside old JoveG
The father of us all who droveG
The giants out of sight by thunderF
-
This man loves farming that man lawH
While this one follows pathways martialI
What moots it whither mortals turnJ
Grim fate from her mysterious urnJ
Doles out the lots with hand impartialI
-
Nor sumptuous feasts nor studied sportsK
Delight the heart by care tormentedL
The mightiest monarch knoweth notM
The peace that to the lowly cotM
Sleep bringeth to the swain contentedN
-
On him untouched of discontentO
Care sits as lightly as a featherF
He doesn't growl about the cropsP
Or worry when the market dropsP
Or fret about the changeful weatherF
-
Not so with him who rich in factQ
Still seeks his fortune to redoubleI
Though dig he deep or build he highG
Those scourges twain shall lurk anighG
Relentless Care relentless TroubleI
-
If neither palaces nor robesR
Nor unguents nor expensive toddyQ
Insure Contentment's soothing blissS
Why should I build an edificeT
Where Envy comes to fret a bodyQ
-
Nay I'd not share your sumptuous cheerU
But rather sup my rustic pottageV
While that sweet boon the gods bestowQ
The peace your mansions cannot knowQ
Blesseth my lowly Sabine cottageV
