Horace To Maecenas Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCBDAEEA FGHHGIBCCB FDDDDJKCCK LBMMBAKNNK

How breaks my heart to hear you sayA
You feel the shadows fall about youB
The gods forefendC
That fate O friendC
I would not I could not live without youB
You gone what would become of meD
Your shadow O beloved MaecenasA
We've shared the mirthE
And sweets of earthE
Let's share the pangs of death between usA
-
I should not dread Chinaera's breathF
Nor any threat of ghost infernalG
Nor fear nor painH
Should part us twainH
For so have willed the powers eternalG
No false allegiance have I swornI
And whatsoever fate betide youB
Mine be the partC
To cheer your heartC
With loving song to fare beside youB
-
Love snatched you from the claws of deathF
And gave you to the grateful cityD
The falling treeD
That threatened meD
Did Fannus turn aside in pityD
With horoscopes so wondrous likeJ
Why question that we twain shall wanderK
As in this landC
So hand in handC
Into the life that waiteth yonderK
-
So to your shrine O patron mineL
With precious wine and victims fare youB
Poor as I amM
A humble lambM
Must testify what love I bear youB
But to the skies shall sweetly riseA
The sacrifice from shrine and heatherK
And thither bearN
The solemn prayerN
That when we go we go togetherK
