Horace Ii, 3. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABAB CCDCD EEFEF GGHGH CCICI

Be tranquil Dellius I prayA
For though you pine your life awayA
With dull complaining breathB
Or speed with song and wine each dayA
Still still your doom is deathB
-
Where the white poplar and the pineC
In glorious arching shade combineC
And the brook singing goesD
Bid them bring store of nard and wineC
And garlands of the roseD
-
Let's live while chance and youth obtainE
Soon shall you quit this fair domainE
Kissed by the Tiber's goldF
And all your earthly pride and gainE
Some heedless heir shall holdF
-
One ghostly boat shall some time bearG
From scenes of mirthfulness or careG
Each fated human soulH
Shall waft and leave his burden whereG
The waves of Lethe rollH
-
So come I pri' thee Dellius mineC
Let's sing our songs and drink our wineC
In that sequestered nookI
Where the white poplar and the pineC
Stand listening to the brookI
