I like the Anglo Saxon speechA
With its direct revealingsB
It takes a hold and seems to reachA
'Way down into your feelingsB
That some folk deem it rude I knowC
And therefore they abuse itD
But I have never found it soC
Before all else I choose itD
I don't object that men should airE
The Gallic they have paid forF
With quot Au revoir quot quot Adieu ma ch re quotD
For that's what French was made forF
But when a crony takes your handD
At parting to address youG
He drops all foreign lingo andD
He says quot Good by God bless you quotD
-
This seems to me a sacred phraseB
With reverence impassionedD
A thing come down from righteous daysB
Quaintly but nobly fashionedD
It well becomes an honest faceB
A voice that's round and cheerfulH
It stays the sturdy in his placeB
And soothes the weak and fearfulH
Into the porches of the earsB
It steals with subtle unctionC
And in your heart of hearts appearsB
To work its gracious functionC
And all day long with pleasing songI
It lingers to caress youG
I'm sure no human heart goes wrongI
That's told quot Good by God bless you quotD
-
I love the words perhaps becauseB
When I was leaving MotherJ
Standing at last in solemn pauseB
We looked at one anotherJ
And I I saw in Mother's eyesB
The love she could not tell meK
A love eternal as the skiesB
Whatever fate befell meK
She put her arms about my neckL
And soothed the pain of leavingM
And though her heart was like to breakN
She spoke no word of grievingM
She let no tear bedim her eyeO
For fear that might distress meK
But kissing me she said good byO
And asked our God to bless meK
