Epilogue Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEBB BBBBFF GHGHII JKJKLL MLMLNN

The day is done and lo the shadesA
Melt 'neath Diana's mellow graceB
Hark how those deep designing maidsA
Feign terror in this sylvan placeB
Come friends it's time that we should goC
We're honest married folk you knowC
-
Was not the wine delicious coolD
Whose sweetness Pyrrha's smile enhancedE
And by that clear Bandusian poolD
How gayly Chloe sung and dancedE
And Lydia Die aha methinksB
You'll not forget the saucy minxB
-
But oh the echoes of those songsB
That soothed our cares and lulled our heartsB
Not to that age nor this belongsB
The glory of what heaven born artsB
Speak with the old distinctive charmF
From yonder humble Sabine farmF
-
The day is done Now off to bedG
Lest by some rural ruse surprisedH
And by those artful girls misledG
You two be sadly compromisedH
You go perhaps I 'd better stayI
To shoo the giddy things awayI
-
But sometime we shall meet againJ
Beside Digentia cool and clearK
You and we twain old friend and thenJ
We'll have our fill of pagan cheerK
Then could old Horace join us threeL
How proud and happy he would beL
-
Or if we part to meet no moreM
This side the misty Stygian SeaL
Be sure of this on yonder shoreM
Sweet cheer awaiteth such as weL
A Sabine pagan's heaven O friendN
The fellowship that knows no endN
