To Miss Grace KingA
-
-
Down in the old French quarterB
Just out of Rampart streetC
I wend my wayD
At close of dayD
Unto the quaint retreatC
Where lives the Voodoo DoctorB
By some esteemed a shamE
Yet I'll declare there's none elsewhereF
So skilled as Doctor SamE
With the claws of a deviled crawfishG
The juice of the prickly pruneH
And the quivering dewI
From a yarb that grewI
In the light of a midnight moonH
-
I never should have known himJ
But for the colored folkK
That here obtainL
And ne'er in vainL
That wizard's art invokeK
For when the Eye that's EvilM
Would him and his'n damnE
The negro's grief gets quick reliefN
Of Hoodoo Doctor SamE
With the caul of an alligatorB
The plume of an unborn loonH
And the poison wrungO
From a serpent's tongueO
By the light of a midnight moonH
-
In all neurotic ailmentsP
I hear that he excelsQ
And he insuresR
Immediate curesR
Of weird uncanny spellsQ
The most unruly patientS
Gets docile as a lambE
And is freed from ill by the potent skillT
Of Hoodoo Doctor SamE
Feathers of strangled chickensU
Moss from the dank lagoonH
And plasters wetV
With spider sweatV
In the light of a midnight moonH
-
They say when nights are grewsomeE
And hours are oh so lateW
Old Sam steals outX
And hunts aboutX
For charms that hoodoos hateW
That from the moaning riverB
And from the haunted glenY
He silently brings what eerie thingsZ
Give peace to hoodooed menY
The tongue of a piebald 'possumE
The tooth of a senile 'coonY
The buzzard's breath that smells of deathA2
And the film that liesB2
On a lizard's eyesB2
In the light of a midnight moonY
